Southeast Asia transport and construction news (#244)
Sihanoukville's mega mixed-use development and ghost buildings, unfinished infrastructure in the new Indonesian capital, Malaysia's ECRL on track for 2026 launch, Thailand double-track railway projects, Hanoi metro line 2
The Future Southeast Asia Newsletter features transport and urban development news in Southeast Asia, edited by James Clark.
Hello from Ha Tien in the southwest corner of Vietnam. I crossed the land border from Cambodia here and I’m returning to Ho Chi Minh City to see the first metro line. Yes, after years of delays (and years of me complaining about it), Line 1 of the HCMC Metro will open on 22 December. It is business as usual on Christmas Day in this part of the world, so I will also be posting a Christmas edition newsletter.
My Cambodia trip covered the main cities on the national train line (Poipet, Battambang, Phnom Penh, Sihanoukville, Kampot, and Kep). I was in Sihanoukville on the weekend, and it is still shocking how many empty buildings there are. I was also stunned to see a new mega project underway, which I have made a fact sheet about in this week’s feature article. I will have at least two articles about Sihanoukville in the coming months, in addition to reports on the other cities I visited in Cambodia.
