Poipet trip report, reviving Sihanoukville’s abandoned buildings, proposed Cebu subway, Ipoh Sentral redevelopment, massive mixed-use development in Bangkok's Chinatown

The Future Southeast Asia Newsletter features transport and urban development news in Southeast Asia, edited by James Clark.

Today is the first day of the Year of the Snake, so Happy Lunar New Year for those who observe.

Today is also the 250th weekly newsletter for Future Southeast Asia. This weekly roundup goes out every Wednesday, and I haven’t missed a Wednesday yet (though my current hotel is conspiring to delay it with slow internet).

I have a publishing calendar that I plan my travels around. I usually avoid long travel days on Wednesday, but if it can’t be avoided I will prepare the newsletter in advance. After 250 weeks, I still enjoy putting the newsletter together to discover interesting news. For example, this week I found out that Cebu has proposed a 67.5-kilometre subway (read more about that in the Philippines section below).

This week I started my reports for paid subscribers of last month’s Cambodia trip, starting with the border city of Poipet.

Latest posts at Future Southeast Asia

Poipet plans to transform this border town associated with casinos and scam compounds into an enthralling, civilized city that will attract national and international tourists. I spent a night in Poipet to see how it is going.
